I’ve had a long standing grudge about the way dishtowels seem to be divided into two categories. The cute dishtowels often don’t work - they just push the water around on the dish which means you hang them up to look at but you don’t use them. And the towels that are super absorbent are often not cute at all and look kind of dismal and utilitarian hanging by your sink.

Then of course there’s the other laundry list of issues many towels succumb to. They shrink drastically in the wash. The design instantly fades into dowdiness. The edges roll up like a party horn, never to be seen again and making them impossible to fold.

So a few years ago, I set out to design a towel that defied all these problems. I realized that the effectiveness of the towel comes down to the weave, and the ideal weave for creating a cloth that is both soft and absorbent is what they use for cloth diapers: birdseye! And why not make them in designs pretty enough to hang cheerfully in your kitchen?

These towels are the best possible combination. They are absolute workhorses in your kitchen and they look adorable as they hang to dry - which means that really earn their place!

About the Design

The "Blenheim Stripe" pattern is very loosely copied from a wallpaper hanging on the walls of Blenheim Palace in Woodstock, England. Incidentally, I had one of my most embarrassing moments at a champagne and canapes event at Blenheim Palace . . . but that is a story for another time and I'm afraid it wasn't then that I saw the wallpaper so it's hardly relevant. I actually only glimpsed the (very brown) wallpaper in a film which was shot in the palace and I know nothing more about it . . . not even what part of the palace it's in. So really the only thing that connects this to the palace is the name . . .

Care

Machine wash, Line dry (ok full disclosure - that's what it says on the tag, probably for bureaucratic, legal reasons . . . I always chuck mine in the dryer and they do just fine!)
